I have a situation where I have a list of names and I want a field to
choose from those name and print in grey the best fit ie. For state I
would type A and Alabama would be inserted in grey. If I continued to
type Alas then Alaska would be inserted. When I press return/tab the
grey name would be my value.

Is this an easy task? if so, can you point me in the right direction.

You want a "type ahead" functionality, commonly referred to as
"clairvoyance."

It doesn't exist natively in FileMaker, but it can be simulated.

Or simulate something like it. But this involves a script that keeps looping
and is not very nice to work with.

FileMaker 8 is RUMOURED to be due "soon" and RUMOURED to have
auto-complete ability ... but as the saying goes, two rumours do not a
product make. ;o)
