Default [Ann] Do you suffer from Colornoma or Mismatchphobia? - 12-12-2005 , 01:02 PM

If you don't want to read the true story below of love and
tragedy...alas success...just click here
http://www.fmwebschool.com/fmcolor.php

I had Colornoma. I also had Mismatchphobia. Many of us suffer from
Colornoma and Mismatchphobia, but it wasn't until recently that we
realized that it had a name. Colornoma is very similar to Repetititus.
The symptoms of both are using the same colors over and over again for
all phases of our lives. We mostly see this in the clothing world
where there is a multitude of colors available, but we continually
purchase and wear the same colors over and over. What does this have
to do with FileMaker or FileMaker Web Publishing?

Colornoma, Mismatchphopia and Repetititus (Known now as the Monotonous
Triad) don't only affect our shopping habits, but they also suck the
very creative marrow from our artistic bones. I will explain. I have
spent nearly 10 years developing FileMaker solutions and websites. I
found myself stuck in the same routine using the same colors over and
over again. I wanted to experiment with other colors, but I was afraid
of creating a horrible tapestry of color that would send my clients
running...simply put...that would make small children cry. I couldn't
handle this.

So, what did I do? Well for starters, I quit "Colornoma Anonymous" and
I threw away my dog-eared copy of "Beat Colornoma and other
Monochromatic Illnesses". I felt a fervor inside like I had never felt
before. Feeling like an unfettered rebel, I shot myself across the
room in my leather chair. I gently brought my computer out of
hibernation and like a phoenix rising from the ashes, FileMaker
appeared....a glowing beacon of "hope" on my screen. I felt panic well
up inside of me...I had been here before...inundated with an endless
vortex of colors and options. This time however, I would not fall prey
to the "Monotonous Triad" I would prevail...and I did.

See how,

There's something vaguely ironic about advocating escape from from the
"monotonous triad" from yet another blue and white website.

Still it looks pretty cool. In the past I've used online interior
decorating "paint selection" tools to come up with colour schemes for
websites; this works great by the way.

It would be nice to have something like that built within filemaker,
which is what it appears you've sort of done... but the real issue in
filemaker I think is actually *using* the colors you select.

FM only allows you to specify 16 "custom" colours, which should be
enough for most projects, but they don't show up on the color palettes,
you have to click "other color" every time you want to use them, which
is a bit of a pain, and I think half the reason many of us don't venture
off the default palette much.

-cheers,
Dave

I agree, using custom colors is a right pain in the arse! Are there any
shortcuts to changing the color of something? i.e. Can you click on object
1, hold a button, then click on object 2 and have 2 be the same color as 1?
I think I can answer my own question, but if someone has found the magic way
please let me know!

By the way... this is a clever application, but it costs $20 for the
unlocked version. I would be remiss if I did not point out some of the many
similar utilities (most of which offer more flexible matching options)
available for free on the web:

-----

http://www.colormatch.dk/
http://meddle.dzygn.com/tests/colors/

A very easy, elegant, visual tool that returns six complementary colors. The
first link is the original gem, the second one provides RGB values and
precise color entry.

-----

http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html

Offers five different styles of color matching

-----

http://www.december.com/html/spec/colorschemer.html

Offers six different styles of matching, plus a nice preview of a formatted
page using the colors. (Requires the free Adobe SVG viewer plug-in from
http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html)

-----

http://www.webwhirlers.com/colors/colorwizard.asp

Offers seven different matches of color (but requires entry of hex values)

-----

http://www.hypergurl.com/colormatch.php

Another color mixer that supplies nine compatible colors. (Try clicking on
the "Load predefined theme" popup menu and using the scroll wheel on your
mouse.)

-----

http://colorblender.com/

A very easy to use blender that will also suggest PANTONE(R) colors.

-----

For an in-depth look at the theory behind color schemes, and why you might
want to use one style of color matching over another, check out:

The format painter is the proverbial sledgehammer solution.

I've given up on the format painter as its just too destructive.

Its just not worth the risk of wiping out font sizes, font styles, text
alignment, engraved/embossed settings, border settings, value list
settings, field behaviour settings (?) etc just to set the colour.

I admit I haven't used the format painter much recently in FM7/8 -- has
it improved much??, but I found in FM5/6 that it created more work than
it saved once the database was developed past a certain point, and often
introduced nasty interface bugs that didn't get detected fast enough
(particularly changing value list settings).

-regards,
Dave

Well, yes, you're right that it applies all formats, not just the ones you
want. I suppose I myself don't use it as much as I could for the same
reasons. But, it does come handy at times.

Another solution is to Control-Click an object that has the color style you
want; this sets the default for newly-created objects.
