Default Access old Database - 01-28-2007 , 01:58 PM

Hi,
I recently converted a FM Pro 5.5 database to FM Pro 8.5 (Windows XP).
When I tried to open the converted file I was asked for a password.
The password that had been attached to the file did not work.
How do I access the converted file? I have no need at this time to
start a new database, I just nedd to access converted databases.

Thanks for any help.

Does the password work in the 5.5 file?

If so, try playing with the username. I don't think 5.5 had
usernames, so the username for 8.5 should be blank, but try Admin too.

Open the file with 5.5 and remove all protection, then convert.

Try one of the following

User: Admin
PW: <Blank> (Leave empty!)

or if you know the old pasword
User: OldPassword <Fill in your old password!>
PW: OldPassword <Fill in your old password!>

And next time (and from now on allways) remember to keep a backup of old
files. Backup old files before conversion, backup your converted files
before you start working AND back up any new FMP file before you start
working. Be aware that FileMaker might have problems when opening a file
which is present on your disk more then once. ZIP the copies.

The converted file is a new file. You should still have the old file and
be able to open it in 5.5, that is, unless you trashed it.

I use both FP5 files and now FP8.5.

The conversion process to a fp7 format does not delete your old FP5
file, it only ads the word OLD to the end of the filename right before
the extenstion .fp5 so unless you deleted it, it should exist in the
same directory.

Since 5.5 did not use usernames, you leave the username field blank
and use the 5.5 password in the password field.

Good luck.

DavidR has it exactly right. The other suggestions are odd.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I did end up finding and using
the file I had backed up just before converting.
