Strangely enough, I just opened a version of the file by using the FM8
"open" command in the tool bar (first time) and not from the /file/open
command. It opened the file. The guest option was available, used
that. There was a reference about network sharing - something I am not
trying to do at present.

I went back and tried to open the original FM6 file, (with all data and
passwords intact) using the toolbar but rec'vd the same result - no
access. kooky?

FYI -

deleting ALL passwords, including the admin, and leaving total access
to a single "no password" allowed the file to be opened under guest
option in FM8. I will have to convert this way and have all users
reenter their passwords on first log in.

Thanks for your advice - it helped in figuring it out.

Question: this doesn't seem right though - I'm guessing normally this
would translate with all passwords intact and their goups from FM6?

Have you tried specifically adding a new password in 6 with full access, then
converting it and seeing what you get?

Yes, actually added a "user" with "no password" to the FM6 file.
Opened this FM6 file with FM8 which performed the conversion and
offered the account/password interface but, with the "non password
user", the GUEST login feature was available (has been grayed out in
past) and allowed me into the database. All the users are there,
passwords and permissions.

There it is: create a user with no password in the FM6 file, open in
FM8, after conversion, open file as a guest user.

Thanks for all your time.

Odysseus, after a conversion, the password used in v6 is also the user name.
Enter both of them (the password is case sensitive) and you'll have no
trouble assessing the files.

After FM8 converts my FM6 file and I attempt to open, FM8 serves -
Open "filename x" using: Account name and Password? FM8 is getting the
account name from the FM8 application preferences. But I am at a loss
to what password it is referrring to. I've tried passwords related to
the converted file to no avail. My keychain password - noluck. What
am I missing? Can anyone advise?
