Default 8.5v2 Updater Available - 03-20-2007 , 10:09 AM

FileMaker has just released a Windows updater for FileMaker Pro 8.5 and
FileMaker Pro Advanced 8.5.

8.5v2 for Windows addresses two key areas:

- Makes FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Advanced work better under Windows Vista
- Addresses the "big" print job issue many of us have encountered.

Note that there is NOT a v2 updater for the Macintosh platform at this time.

You can download the updater at...

http://www.filemaker.com/support/downloads/index.html. Make sure you
choose Windows from the pulldown.

Huh -- if after 6+ months since the release of 8.5, this is *all* they
had to fix in an updater, I guess that's not bad...

It probably wasn't all they had to fix, but it was all they chose to
fix.

Specifically, from the ReadMe document
(http://www.filemaker.com/support/upd...8.5v2_win.html) ...

Printing
1. Sending a large print job to a file or to a printer no longer
causes blank pages to be produced and data to write to the screen.

Drat. I was hoping that the "big" print jobs fix would come to the Mac,
but its symptoms seem rather different than the printing problem
afflicting the Windows version.

I'll have to post a separate follow-up on that, since the Mac PostScript
printing bug that started in 7.0 is still with us in 8.5.

The issue was that for large print jobs, it would print the first few
pages and all of the remaining pages would be output as blank. This has
nothing to do with PDF size.

What means "big"?

I tried FMP 8.0 once on Mac, and it still does produce huge PDFs (50 MB
instead of 0.5 MB) since it included font definitions again and again.
