Default 5.5 files compatible with 8? - 09-27-2005 , 09:27 AM

Hi All,

A friend has misplaced his CD for FileMaker Pro 5.5. He just bought a new
PC and figures it's time to just purchase FileMaker Pro 8. Will his files
created in 5.5 be compatible with the newer version?

Thanks for you help!

David

Not directly compatible . FM8 can't directly read FM5 file format
He will have to convert them to the new format before.

Ther are a lot of threads on the subjet, check them out.

Good luck

Hi Claude,

Thanks for the info. After doing a little more reading, it seems that the
older file can be opened in FM8 and there are prompts that guide you to
converting the file. Is it really this easy?

Thanks for you help!

It is generally easy, depending on the complexity of the original
database system.

A simple single-file solution converts directly, no sweat.

A system of related files is slightly more complex. For best results,
all the related files should be in the same folder (directory) in the
computer, and you should be sure all the relationships, layouts,
calculations, etc are working OK in the old solution. Then just drag all
the related files at once to the FMP8 icon, and they will all be
converted, with all their relationships, etc, intact.

If you convert them one at a time, the relationships will end up broken.

After conversion of the system of related files, you should check to be
sure everything is working right.

In my experience, converting several different systems of related files,
the conversion has always worked fine.

The converted solution will work just like the old solution. It will not
have the new features of FMP 8. To take advantage of those new features,
redesign will be needed after the conversion.
