Default XCOPY *.BTR not getting everything - 10-23-2007 , 11:20 AM

From W2K3 Server SP2, we script a nightly backup that reaches out and
touches a NetWare 3.12 server running btrieve.
The problem is we're not getting reliable backups using XCOPY and
bkutil .lock . We map a drive to the btrieve folder and before we run
xcopy we lock the db but oft times the BTR files are different sizes
on the Windows server and sometimes the fiel count is different, not
all the files are copied, altho' we're logging each and every copy.
I suspect the MS CSNW is the culprit and plan to move the backup
script to a Win9x box runing the Novell Client32, but before I do
that ... any suggestions? For tonights backup, I will run 3 bkutil
locks with a few seconds delay. As I said, sometimes we appear to get
all the BTR files, but not every night.
all the best.

What is "bkutil lock"??? The proper way to do this is to ensure that
everyone is out of the database, which will ensure that the files are
closed, and they can be copied normally.

If you MUST have users in the database, then you need to use the BUTIL
-STARTBU command on the server to put the files into Continuous
Operations Mode. (See our white paper at
www.goldstarsoftware.com/press.asp for more information.) Once the
files are in ContOps mode, they canbe safely copied as a snapshot. The
hard part there, though, is synchronizing the times on the WS doing the
copying and the server. You might be better off copying to a staging
directory using the server-side copy command while in ContOps mode, and
then copying to your other server AFTER this completes.
