Default Should I expose P.2000 Btrieve Operational data to the Web ? - 09-02-2003 , 06:23 PM

Hi All,

We have a stable reservation system, with Pervasive.Btrieve 2000 on
Netware, with around 300 users (max) access it online via Terminal
Server. (Its the 'Transactional', Not the 'Relational' one.)

Now the company has a Website developed by another third party, and they
request to directly access the operational Btrieve data, via ODBC (using
asp or php), to display the data (e.g : seat availibility, route,
schedule etc.)

to the web.

Is there any Security issue by letting them access our
operational Btrieve

data via ODBC ? Not to mention Performance Issue ?

FYI we develope the aplication, I should have enough reason to
reject the

web designer request to access operational data, do I have the
arguments ??

Thanks for your help,

Krist

There might be a security issue if the web application allows random
queries to be fed by the users (either through url or post operation).
I'd consider this bad programming though.

There may be a loss in performance as the relational interface may
require more processing power/time. Obviously this depends on the
queries that are being made and also the number of times these queries
are executed (visitors).

To kick in an open door: Pervasive now ships DataExchange. One of the
options this product offers is to allow you to create an external data
portal. Feeding the data portal may also have some loss in overall
performance of the original application, but this should be minimal.
The great thing is that if the web application actually crashes the
data portal, this will have no consequence to the original data.
