Default REQ: FAQ listing and book advice - 04-08-2005 , 02:56 PM

A quick scan of this ng turns up no FAQ advertisement; is there one I
should read?

Also--hopefully not a FAQ--is there still available a good book that
covers general Btrieve 6.15 programming and usage on NT? I typically
write things in Perl but I can probably cobble together something
worthwhile in C++.

I'm a relatively capable end user stuck between the proverbial rock and
hard place. working DDF's I do not have....

Thanks,

~Jason

Start here:
www.goldstarsoftware.com/press.asp
The article on ODBC access may be a good start, though I suspect that
you already know this problem.

Otherwise, get the Pervasive.SQL SDK, available at www.pervasive.com.

If you need to create DDF files for your existing files you can take a
look at BtSearch32 at www.nssdd.com. It will help you analyze the
structure and build the DDF files.

Nice article. I believe you created DDF's for us a long while ago now and
I think the DDF's are probably OK, but I could not get Crystal Reports to
access the data or create a DSN and use access. I'll let you know
privately if I want to mash my head down that road again. It just seems
like the whole DDF/ODBC thing is hackery that was never intended for this
DBMS and I'd rather learn to use what was ment to be used

Good articles and such aside what I really want is a book (real paper in
my hands) that is instructive on how to use the native Btreive tools
(btutil, etc...). I've seen our sowtware provider use it to do SQL (or
SQL like) queries and I'd like to be able to script that as well as learn
how to do reindexing and other maintainence chores.

Our provider is totally unwilling to upgrade to the pervasive offering due
to the, erm, less profitable redistribution terms. That's why I need a
book that describes the older 6.xx system. If someone could just
recomend a few titles, even if they're out of print I can look for used
sources. Surely there were a few good books back in the day!

I take it there's no faq for this group?

No FAQ. No Books, beyond Kyle's "Btrieve Complete" ($35) and Trocino's
"Illustrated Guide" ($??), and the product manuals themselves (which
are quite complete).

The next closest thing is our Pervasive.SQL Service & Support course,
which provides useful information on the background behind everything,
and it is aplicable to both Pervasive.SQL versions AND Btrieve 6.x.

Wow, there were actual product manuals, what's that!? That would be
great if I could get those but I bet your other two suggestions will have
to do. Thanks for those.

That would be great I'm sure. Getting my employer to pony up is another
question entirely. Oh well.

Thanks for all the info,

~Jason
