Hi all, We have some problems with pervasive 8.5 workgroup and a terminal server. Our configuration is as follows: 'Workstation' - Windows 2000 terminal server SP4 - Pervasive 8.5 workgroup - Novell Netware client 4.90 SP2 with 49psp_c installed - Magic 8.3 - Zen ZfD 4.0.1 - Workstation manager. 'Database Server' - Netware 6.5 - Pervasive 8.5 Server Here is the problem: About once a day the terminal server stops working. Everyone using the Magic with the Pervasive database hangs and the connection gets terminated. When the user tries to login again, the Novell Client does not go any futher as the Animated Novell Icon. When the user tries to login with 'Workstation Only' enabled, the user can login normaly. But the user cannot use magic with Pervasive at that time because there is no Netware connection. Users witch wore working in Word or Excel does not get terminated and can still save theire work. But the user cannot start Magic with Pervasive if the server is in the 'problem state'. If they do so, theire session hangs. After disabling the Novell Workstation Manager ( found in a Novell TID ). The problem is still there. For now the only solution is to reboot the server. Hope, anyone of you has an idea. Regards, Eric Brongers |

We have been researching a problem with the Novell Client v4.90 SP2 whereby the "workstation" (in your case, the term server) hangs or crashes. The problem is more severe with the 4.90 SP1a client, and we've been able to write a simple application that rapidly opens & closes database files on the server -- and it actually rebooted a WinXP workstation while running -- pretty nasty. This same app didn't fail on the SP2 (with Sept patches) client version. Interestingly, the Pervasive.SQL 2000i client does NOT seem to suffer from the same problem, and this tends to work a lot better, even to a V8.6 server, although you have to disable the "version mismatch" warning message to avoid annoying the users. While I fully believe that the problem is in the Novell Client software itself, there is definitely a difference between the PSQL2000i client and the PSQLV8.6 client that makes one crash and the other work just fine. I've submitted my test data to Pervasive, but it seems they have not been able to devote a lot of time on this problem. Pervasive's support group has been unable to provide any ideas on where to go next, and this incident has been open for too long now. Unfortunately, I've got several customers experiencing pain on this issue, and I'm just about ready to give up on it, because Pervasive has not been able to make any progress. We are getting to the point where will will refuse to sell any more Pervasive.SQL V8.6 engines for NetWare until this problem can be resolved. In short, try the PSQL2000i client & see if that works better for you. Otherwise, we'll all need to wait until Novell and Pervasive get their heads together and figure this one out.
