Default Need data from old BTRIEVE database files - 02-05-2004 , 12:20 AM

Hi folks,

I'm an database developer in the Unix world and have gotten involved in a
project where I need to import data from a BTRIEVE database. All I need is
a simple dump of the data into CSV or something. Can anyone offer advice
on free, very inexpensive, or shareware tools for doing this?

If you're in Utah, I'd even be interested in using you for a couple hours.

You could export the table content to a flat file using the standard
tool BUTIL, which is in every Btrieve distribution. You could then
parse these flat files with some perl script to output your desired
format.

The problem with Btrieve tables is that they hold no (meta)
information on their contents. Unless you have Data Dictionary Files
(DDFs) or some other discription of the table structure you will have
to analyze the data to figure out were to put the column seperators
and what datatype the column is. If you have DDFs it'll be easier to
get a Pervasive.SQL Workstation Engine and export the table contents
through ODBC.

BTW, with a Linux requester you could also access the live Btrieve
database instead of relying on regular dumps.

Our white paper on the topic can be found at www.goldstarsoftware.com/press.asp
-- look for the paper on accessing Btrieve files from ODBC. This discusses the
issues at hand when trying to export Btrieve data, and also provides some ways to
do an initial export.

If you have data structure documentation (or even better, app source code), we
can easily build DDF's for you, and optionally handle the data export as well.
Without documentation, the process is MANY TIMES more difficult, and it can get
quite costly, depending on the data structures themselves.

Try it yourself (with the aid of the white paper, of course) first, and if you'd
like help with this, let us know...

Another option BtSearch at www.nssdd.com. It can help you analyze the
structure of your files and builds the DDF files. Then it will export
to dbase or ascii formats.
