Can anyone recommend an alternate to the older Smithware DDF Builder program? While it suits my needs just fine, it unfortunately is unstable. Frequently, there are various DDF files that I have that get into some kind of funk where when I attempt to call up one of the files, DDFB just shuts down with no error message of any kind, and leaves the DDF files locked. At one time, I had an older version of the same program on my system, but I've since migrated to a new machine (the problem happened on both machines), and I used to be able to just load the older version for those files. It wasn't a good solution because it did not recognize the indices properly, but at least I could change the file layouts and then I could usually re-access them again in the newer version. As always, I would prefer something free, but I'd also be willing to pay, since this problem I'm encountering with DDFB is getting more and more inconvenient. I really don't need anything fancy, just something that I can build and modify DDF's with, and print hard copies of the layouts. I should mention that I'm using an older version of Pervasive, 6.15 for Windows NT/95, which works quite nicely for now. We will be upgrading to Pervasive's current version sometime in the future, but not immediately. I'm sure that their current version, probably in the SDK has its own DDF editor, but I'm also pretty sure that the current version will not co-reside with my 6.15 version. Bill Hileman, CPD |

And if you need a DDF structure printer compatible with the older stuff, I believe my FPrint tool (www.goldstarsoftware.com/download.asp?wp_ml=0) will handle THAT part of things for you... |

Thanks, Bill. I already looked at all my old bookmarks yesterday and downloaded your program, and used it as well. I am beginning to suspect something's wrong with one of my tables, however, since when I tried to pass the "*" to print them all (test printed one table first - was ok) it returned some wild error: Error (Remote Packet Detail): Return Code was 1. It displayed that error twice. It does appear to have printed all the tables (sending to printer right now). It occurs to me that it might be that the table record might be locked, since after checking the values via Ddf Edit, I then tried to call it up with Ddf Builder again, and it crashed again, which usually leaves that table record locked until I reboot. I like the Ddf Edit, but it does not appear to have a print feature, so I may need to use both programs. I wasn't able to find any other Ddf editors or printers out there of any kind. |
