Default Licencing wge v. 8 and 9 issues - question - 12-05-2005 , 04:43 AM

Hello to all Pervasive users,

I have PV8 WGE licence for 5 connections. All databases are located on
one machine. AFAIK, Pervasive do not sell addtional single licences
(increasing the total number) for its 5 connections WGE package.
Now, to workarround it I want to buy 3 additional licences of
Pervasive 9 WGE, install the engine on a new machine and split
databases between these two "semi-servers" so that more users could
have access to databases. In other words, I want to have 2
workstations acting like server machines; one with engine ver. 8 and
one database, the other one with ver. 9. and the rest of databases.
Is this kind of configuration going to work? Thank you in advance for
any hints.

Chris

I would not recommend doing something like this. Let's first review
the difference between a license and a concurrent user:

The Pervasive.SQL Workgroup Engine is licensed PER COMPUTER. As such,
you should purchase one license for each computer onto which it will be
installed. If you have 5 computers (including the server), then you
should purchase 5 licenses.

The Pervasive.SQL Workgroup Engine supports a maximum of 5 CONCURRENT
USERS. This means that up to 5 computers can be running applications
and accessing a database on a system with the WGE installed.

Having said that, if you intend to have 5 computers accessing a
database on one server, and you want to have three DIFFERENT computers
accessing a database on a second server, then you are OK to go with the
PSQLv9.1 WGE engine. Or, you can go with PSQLV8 instead -- both will
work, though buying 9.1 now will save you some time.

If, however, you want users to be able to run one or the other
database, then you MUST stay with the same version on both for best
results -- either all V8 or all v9.

Another solution, of course, is to go with the Client/Server Engine
(CSE) instead. Although it is more expensive, it does allow you to get
past the 5-U limit. A 10-U system for PSQLv9 starts at $950 USD, and
you can increase it to as many CONCURRENT users as you need. There is
no separate license cost for the workstations, and you can actually
install the client on as many PC's as you need -- only the concurrent
license count matters with the CSE.

Does this make sense? More importantly, does it answer your question?

I realize that it is not the best solution (maintaining two
workstations working as servers instead of just one server
engine) but I cannot do anything else at the moment.

This is what I want to achieve.
I was afraid of possible (in my judgement) licencing interference when
these two engines work in the same time.

Yes, thank you very much.
