Default How to keep a Btrieve 5 legacy application retiring Netware? - 06-19-2007 , 04:14 PM

Hi everyone,

We have a very old legacy application, developed with Clipper and
Btrieve 5, which runs on ours Windows XP workstations, but has a
Netware NLM (btrieve.nlm) running server-side.

Our network evolved to be a Microsoft network, and this is the only
Netware server we have. I would like to know what are the options, if
any, to replace this server, which is also a very old hardware, with a
newer server, Windows-based.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about Btrieve. Iīve never had the chance
(or the need) to work with it, but I ended up to be the network admin
of this company. I just donīt know what would replace this Netware
NLM.

Iīd appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Marcelo di Castro

You should have no problems (or at least a few easily correctable ones)
moving to a current Pervasive PSQL v9.5 engine on Windows (or Linux, if
you choose to go that way). The PSQLv9 engine contains "Btrieve v9"
inside of it, and should be a plug&play replacement for your existing
5.x engine.

In the process, you'll also move from IPX/SPX communications to TCP
communications, so you should also see a performance gain.

The next step? Download the PSQLv9 engine 30-day trial from
www.pervasive.com/downloads, and install it to a test Windows box.
Move a copy of the data and applications over there. Set up a single
test workstation with the PSQLv9 client, map the right drive to the
server (to make the application "findable"), and try running it.

If you get errors, let us know what they are -- should be easy to fix.
Of course, we also provide both remote and on-site help for this
process, so if you need any "professional" assistance, keep us in mind.

Hi Bill, thanks for your reply.

I visited pervasiveīs site, and noticed that there is a "Workgroup"
version. Would it work? Since this is a very legacy software, it is
rarely used.
In this case, would it need to have a worskation playing the "server"
role?

Just another doubt: how abouts itīs configuration, is it difficult?

Thank you,
Marcelo di Castro

If you are setting up a SINGLE workstation, or even a small 2-5 node
workgroup, then the Workgroup Engine would be the cheapest way to go.
The default install should be just fone for a configuration for you.
