Default Convert .dat file - 02-26-2007 , 10:58 AM

Hi all!
I have to convert some .dat file into some usable format, like CSV, TXT, ...
I've never used Btrieve in my life but my customer gave to me his old
database, and it seems to be in btrieve format 'cause there's a btrieve.exe
file; there is no .ddf file.
With "old database" i mean really old, maybe 15 years ago.

I'm under Windows XP and the btrieve.exe command doesn't work.
I tried also with an MS-DOS6 system but it (btrieve.exe) tells "dos version
incorrect".

How can I extract all the datas?

Bye
Marco

Marco,

You will first need to create the DDF files. You can do this with
BtSearch at www.nssdd.com. It will help you analyze the data and
create the DDF files. Then it will export to dbase or ASCII formats.

I also tried BTSearch and it doesn't work.
BTSearch32 doesn't work because there's no wbtrcall.dll file.
BTSearch16 works but it founds a lot of errors and it doesn't find any
field.

And finally they must be bought for full funcionality.
I don't want to buy something I will never use again. :-\

Tnx
Marco

Start here to get an understanding of what your project will take:

http://www.goldstarsoftware.com/press.asp

Open the White Paper on Accessing Btrieve files from ODBC.

Once you read that, you'll have a better idea of what is required. Put
simply, the task is quite huge, and an extract can easily run hundreds
or thousands of dollars in time. If you're worried about cost, then
the only viable option is to print the reports from the existing
application and hire a temp to type in the data to a new system.

Otherwise, there are options for companies (such as ourselves) to
extract the data for you, but this usually runs in the $1000-$15000
range.

Well, the database I need to convert is quite small, so I don't need to buy
expensive software or something like that.
I'd like to convert the datas to make a favor to my customer, but I've
understood that a favor for him is a killing thing for me! :-)
So, I thank you all but I think I let the customer to reinsert manually all
the datas.
I'm sure this is the best solution for both of us.

Marco,

BtSearch does require the Pervasive Btrieve drivers to be installed
before it will run. If your data does not contain any binary data you
can use butil to export the data. You should download and install the
Pervasive Btrieve version 9 engine which contains that utility as well
as the needed drivers.

Btrieve.exe is a dos based driver. You will not be able to use any
Windows based programs while using that driver. You can download the
trial version of the Pervasive drivers at www.pervasive.com/downloads.
After you install you will also have other utilities from Pervasive
that you can use to review your data.
