If you have any files that are large, note that Btrieve 6.x files can
grow to be AT MOST 4GB in size. With 7.x and 8.x formats, the file can
grow to be AT MOST anywhere from 8GB to 64GB in size, depending on the
page size.
The V8 format has additional performance improvements through something
called the Turbo Write Accelerator (TWA). This feature of the V8 engine
allows for the coalescing of multiple, consecutive pages (i.e. which
would normally be separate disk writes) into fewer (but larger) disk
writes. By reducing the OS-level overhead, substantial performance
gains can be seen on systems that heavily update database files.
As for reading, upgrading the the V8 file format may or may not provide
any performance gains on database reads.
