Default Btrieve Error 84 - 09-03-2003 , 09:24 AM

Is anyone using Veritas to backup a Btrieve application? If so have you
experienced problems with Btrieve error 84?

Recently our network staff decided to change the backup system from
ArcServer to Veritas. Since this was done the Application Services
staff have been receiving calls sporadically for Btrieve error 84. The
Btrieve error 84 seems to be happening about once per week. We
generally get the calls when the first users get on in the system in the
morning after the backups have run.

To correct the problem we have to get all users out of the system and
perform a Bstop/Bstart. Yesterday we had file corruption and had to
perform a recover and load. The system was down from 6:30 AM to about
8:00 PM. Since this application is critical to the operation of our
hospital OR's the downtime is becoming a problem.

Our Network staff does not think the Veritas backups are the source of
the problem but our vendor says we should not be using an open file
backup system.

Any ideas/experience will be most appreciated. Thanks!

You should NOT be using the Open File Backup Agent to back up Btrieve
files. This can definitely cause problems with applications like those from
HBOC.

The best solution is to shut down the database for backups, as this ensures
the best possible copy. Another good solution is to use Continuous
Operations mode, a 24x7 backup method that is part of the database
software. See my white paper on backups at
www.goldstarsoftware.com/press.htm for more details on this. A more
expensive solution would be to look into Pervasive's DataExchange software,
which allows you to synchronize data from your core server to a secondary
server. You can use this backup data set for both a hot FT (fault tolerant)
site, as well as for near-line backups.
