Will Berkeley-DB work on Mac OS X? How hard is it to get it to compile?

No problem at all.

It compiles out-of-the-tar, so to speak. If you use a packagemanager
like Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net/), it is as easy as typing
'fink install db41'
