Default trying to decide if being an oracle dba is for me... - 01-27-2004 , 10:24 PM

Hello,
Im trying to decide if being an oracle dba is for me, I figured Id
share my thoughts an seek any knowledge professional users can
offer...

Shortly after graduating high school I went into mcse training, while
I completed it without any problems (I was one of the few people in
the class that "got it") I got a bad taste from the many cocky admins
I met and soon found the market is saturated with them (I live in
south FL btw) leaving me little job options...

I soon found work at a local company doing inbound tech support, while
this paid the bills it wasnt really what I enjoy doing. I decided I
need to go back to school to get a better skillset.

While I have little experience with oracle it appears to have a decent
market share and to have long term growth available... I have used
other smaller database systems like mySQL and enjoy using them, my
only real problem is that there are very few jobs for non big name
systems...

Id like to start off going for an OCA, and work up from there. Is
college the best way to do this? I need an instructor lead class, as I
got the first book and got very confused early on (I pretty much would
like someone to explain stuff to me so I can understand it in a more
real work example) I have tried to find some kind of school to teach
me locally (I live in west palm beach, fl) but the closest I have
found is in orlando... :-|

Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated !

thanks,
Cameron

Cameron,
Goto Oracle.com get an OTN account, download(get install CD) for your PC /
Windows or Linux. Really need 512MB ram on PC.

Get a DBA book and start using it. Knowledge of SQL is absolutely necessary.

Having some admin experience is good. Need to develop an application using
oracle.
Pick your client tool VB, Java.... Get Oracle Developer if you can.
Some classes or books on database design would be good for understanding
database applications. Try to get an entry level position using Oracle
somewhere after that.

It has the market share. Very good product, not for small companies without
money. that could change. Scales well.
