Default Oracle development - getting started - 03-04-2004 , 12:54 AM

hello,

i would like to know what is the best way to get started learning oracle
from an application development point of view. i know visual basic and
crystal reports, if that will help point me in the right direction. also, i
know that oracle needs a server, is there a version that can run on my
laptop? any book recommendations would also be helpful. is there is an
academic pricing program?

thank you
indera

Go to otn.oracle.com and go to downloads. You can download a version from
there. It can run on your laptop depending upon the OS and version etc.

You can also check out

There are a ton of books. Check out the books on Application Development.
You should know SQL and PL-SQL.
Oracle is also focusing on Java so you may want to learn more about it.
I believe a good Oracle database developer also needs to understand how the
Oracle database works.
Look for books on Administration and Performance tuning.
Oracle offers many courses. You can check out their courses at

Have fun
