student would learn a subject.
Student means you are using it to learn Oracle rather than as part of a
commercial venture (which includes non-profits and governmental
organizations).

If you are using it to provide services, develop products, run an
organization you owe Oracle. If you are using it purely for reasons of
learning it then you are a student.

The minute you change your focus and start building an application it is
time to go back and get a license ... which for a single user on a 1 CPU
machine is remarkably inexpensive.

'download', 'http://otn.oracle.com' and so on and I suspect that the
"developer's license" will fulfill your purpose nicely.

Yes, I ntoiced 'FREE' but I still wondered what "student" means as far
as officially a student a college or someone who is learning like a
student would learn a subject.

Go to http://otn.oracle.com
Click on the download icon at the top
Click on any category
Click on any download
Read the license agreement.

Tell me how many occurances of 'student', and the context, you see in
the agreement. And 'training'. Then tell me how relevant your question
is to the agreement.

Or are you truly not 'curious'?

I did..just now ( I have had long time ago too). I a clear now. I
just don't want to do anything illegal by mistake.

I wanted to know the meaning of the lingo used in the thread. That's
all.

Hi curious,

Daniel gave you the answer. If it's for personal use (i.e. an Oracle
student) you can get the products and prices he quoted.

How about an organization which has a purchased license for 8.1.6 and would
like to use 8.1.7? Can I just download 8.1.7 (well, I know I can download
it) and use it? How many users can log in to the downloaded version? How
do you apply licenses to it if you install it an do find out you need
additional users?

Thanks.

If you purchased licenses, you have a license agreement which may or may
not be customized. The ONLY people that can answer your questions are
your license management people (purchasing department or possibly legal
council) together with your Oracle rep. Any answer you get here will
be speculation.

In general: you buy a license at a specific version. Assuming
'perpetual', you can use that license at that version forever. Most of
the license agreements I've seen don't have any provision for updates,
upgrades or patches; if you want upgrades, you buy the 'update'
maintenance package. Again, you might have a special agreement - read
it!

If you download from OTN, you use that software under the terms of the
OTN license agreement. It's not that difficult to read.

Depending on your organizations specific license terms most likely you
can not do this.

If you have, however, kept up your support contract ... then you can.

I'd suggest a call to your Oracle sales rep. to answer the question.
