"When I want to sort a highlighted section, it sorts the whole column
and unhighlights the highlighted section. In other words:

Al Smith 02/09/01
Joe Brown 07/01/03
Joe Brown 04/04/01
Joe Brown 06/05/02

First name is field 1. Surname is field 2. Date is field 3.

I want to sort the date field with just the Joe Brown section that I
highlight (not the names above or below him) and just print that info.
What happens instead is that the entire date column is sorted, not
just Joe Brown's. What am I doing wrong? Thanks."
Click on Joe Brown and then the 'filter by selection' icon in the menu
Then click on the sort icon in the menu.
Click on the clear selection to view all data but Joe brown remains sorted
